MAKKAH LOOP
a proposal for a guest suite in Mecca
Makkah Loop
Location: Mecca, Saudi Arabia
Date: 2014
Type: A Guest Suite in Mecca
The proposal is an architectural prosthetic applied to the most sacred mosque of Islam, Kaaba, providing guest suites during the annual Islamic pilgrimage, Hajj. The pilgrimage is a one-week long spiritual journey where the pilgrims follow the steps of Prophet Muhammad on the rites of Hajj. Kaaba, along with many structures around it, provides a locus wherein people attach memories and beliefs. In the present day, the religious site has undergone a major development, replacing the surrounding historic structures with luxurious skyscrapers, malls, and restaurants. What was once a spiritual experience has transformed into a religious tourism bringing in $8.5 billion revenue to the Saudi economy during Hajj.
The project proposes to replace the hotels and malls that promote hedonistic ritual with an architectural prosthetic that augments the spiritual experience. Makkah Loop is a physical manifestation of the ceremony promoting the infinite continuity and movement that requires and represents the rites of Hajj. The structure consists of seven levels for the seven times the pilgrims are required to circulate around Kaaba. The ramp levels are supported by double helix structures accentuating the infinite continuity of harmony the religion offers. Lastly, the entire prosthetic is attached with fabric influenced from ihram garment presenting itself as a part of the pilgrimage.
